FACULTY OF SCIENCE > Zoology :

The Department of Zoology, University of Lucknow came into existence in 1921, when Canning College, Lucknow, formerly affiliated to Allahabad University, came under Lucknow University and its Department of Biology was split into the Department of Zoology and Department of Botany. (Late ) Dr. G.S.Thaper (Ph.D. Londan, 1925 ), who had already been serving the Canning College, Lucknow, as Lecturer since 1918 actually became its first officiating Head of the Department. Late Dr. K.N.Bahl (D.Sc., D.Phill., Oxford, 1921) took over in 1923, first as Reader and Head of the Department, who was soon elevated to the post of Professor. The name and fame of the Department of Zoology, Lucknow University, spread far and wide under the able stewardship of the most eminent Zoologist of his time, Professor K.N. Bahl. Professor Bahl was succeeded by Professor G.S. Thaper in 1952. Professor Thaper was one of those leading Zoologists, who laid strong foundations of Helminthology in India. Subsequently, Professor M.B. Lal brought Physiology and Experimental Zoology to new heights; he later became the Vice-Chancellor of University of Lucknow. The subsequent Heads of the Department, Professors P.D. Gupta, Ram Rakshpal, B.K.Tandan, Bhoomitra Dev, K.C. Pandey and Vinod Gupta added new dimensions to pursuits of Zoology. Many other eminent Zoologists, like Professors M.L.Bhatia, S.M.Das,. J.Dayal, Premvati and S.C.Baugh have been on the staff of the Department and made valuable contributions in their area of specializations. As a result of their researches, and those of their students, the Department has become leading centre of teaching and research in several fields, particularly in Physiology and Experimental Zoology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Helminthology, Entomology, Ichthyology, Endocrinology and Ornithology. Present Head, Professor Nirupama Agrawal is taking special interest in modern disciplines in Zoology; like Molecular Taxonomy, Chronobiology & Endocrinology, Protozoology, Pest Management and Environmental Impact Assessment in relation to various Xenobiotics, like Pesticides and Heavy metals, Fluoride, etc. The department is also initiating introduction of some new courses in the emerging fields at undergraduate level.

Besides teaching students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees, to date the Department has Produced more than two hundred Ph.Ds. and 23 D.Scs. Some of the alumni of the Lucknow School of Zoology who are holding or have held Professorial and other important positions are: Dr. M.L.Roonwal, Ex-Director, Zoological Survey of India; Professor M.L.Bhatia, Ex-Head, Department of Zoology, Delhi University, Professor S.M.Das, Ex-Head, Department of Zoology, Kashmir University; Dr.V.G.Jhingran, Professor S.D.Misra; Professor B.B.Saxena (U.S.A.); Professor Satyendra Khera, Professor M.S. Kanungo; Professor G.N.Johri; Professor G.S.Dogra; (Late ) Professor S.K.Moitra; Professor S.L.Jain; Dr. V.Dhanda ; Dr. A.C. Mathur; Dr.K.C. Sanwal; Professor S.K. Singh; Professor N.N.Sharma; Professor R.A.Agrawal; Professor K.P.Singh; Professor. G.P.Agrawal; Professor. Rameshwar Singh; Professor K.C. Pandey and Professor R.S.Tandon.

The Department has 24 faculty, 39 Non- teaching Class III and IV Employees and about 950 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students.
